Plus Biomedicals is a startup that designs and manufactures cutting-edge biomedical devices to provide out of the box solutions for the neurorehabilitation field.
The goal of each solution is to support the Activity Daily Life (ADL) of people with disabilities, elderly, bedridden, children, and caregivers to improve the quality of life in terms of mental and physical well-being and autonomy.
Established in Brescia, where it has its R&D and production center, Plus Biomedicals works both in Italy and abroad and provides consulting services for the creation of class I and IIA medical devices, for people with disabilities, in post-trauma rehabilitation and third age.
Its experience in this field allows it to support physiatrists, physiotherapists, companies, and, in general, those working in the social-health field in identifying solutions for specific needs, even for small targets that would otherwise risk not finding an answer.
Each product is created to improve life and to be functional for the well-being of each person, as summarized by the company’s motto “Think Human, Think For Human“.
The first project
Prioritizing the well-being and overall health of individuals with medical conditions is ingrained in the startup’s DNA, which originated when Simone Mora and Francesco Vavassori commenced their collaboration with ‘Il Sorriso di Barbara,’ an association in Brescia dedicated to supporting cancer patients.
To facilitate hair washing for the elderly, bedridden, and disabled, Simone and Francesco bring their expertise in biomedical engineering to the table. Thus was born AVANT, the first model of headwash for people in wheelchairs.
In a few months, the range of headwashers was expanded with ORIZON, a model designed specifically for the bedridden, functional to their needs.
Plus Biomedicals is born
From this experience, Plus Biomedicals was officially born on January 9, 2019, to continue to develop biomedical devices calibrated to specific health needs, with a focus also on psychophysical well-being.
Thus, in June 2019 comes ESPIN, the patented universal headrest that attaches directly to the wheelchair.
The office in Brescia
After two months of training and networking as part of the prestigious Global Startup Program in New York to foster the company’s development and internationalization, in 2020 the team expanded and involved young people enthusiastic about the project who contribute to business development.
In May, the team moved to its new administrative, commercial, design, and research headquarters on Via Abbiati in Brescia: an open space where ideas are born and grow thanks to a close-knit team. In August, the medical devices production site in San Zeno Naviglio (BS) was inaugurated, dedicated mainly o the production of surgical masks in the COVID-19 emergency field.
Also to overcome barriers, masks for the deaf and dumb are born, with trasparency allowing lip-radig while maintaining anti-virus protection.
With a strengthened team and a second production line at the San Zeno Navigio site, the scope of R&D is expanded to Oral Care and Neurorehabilitation. Our dedication is rewarded with patents granted by the Italian Patent and Trademark Office for our Cwash® and ESPIN products.
The opportunity to collaborate closely with physiatrists, physical therapists, and neurorehabilitation experts has driven Plus Biomedicals to increasingly concentrate on this field, making it the primary area of focus for research, development, design, and production efforts.
This has led to the development of the innovative silicone technology for MoveOn® braces, which is constantly evolving through the application of new technologies to improve the quality of life for patients and caregivers.
The multidisciplinary team
Plus Biomedicals relies on a multidisciplinary team in which technical and engineering expertise is complemented by clinical expertise. In addition, each solution is the result of discussions with physicians, particularly physiatrists, orthopedists, dentists, and end users.
The team currently consists of 8 people with heterogeneous but complementary backgrounds, allowing each project to be followed internally from study to implementation.
Profiles include clinical-scientific, engineering skills with specializations in Biomedical, Mechanical, Electronics and Sensors and Information Technology.
Dynamism and flexibility distinguish the team, which places the need for people at the center of its work, from design to product engineering.
